Maria Ernestina Martinez

María Ernestina Martínez (30 years old) is a mother of five children aged 2 to 14 years old. She says they have had problems accessing water at home for the last four years. “We did not have water during the day. When we had water it was only for one or two hours at midnight, so we had to wake up at that time to fill up containers. Sometimes we did not have water at all for three days, so my children and I had to walk to the next neighborhood to get some water”.

Luis Andrés Martinez (65 years old) is Maria’s father and plays the role of coordinator of the water committee of the community. He explained “the pipes were too narrow so we did not have any water; we had to spend time carrying water in different containers, straining ourselves through the effort”.

Nowadays, María Ernestina and her family have access to clean water and enjoy its benefits. Water is just a step away from them.
