New bathrooms translate to better health and education

Hundreds of students in Nicaragua now have the basic facilities they need at school

By Enmanuel Castro, communications manager, Nicaragua

More than 500 schoolchildren in Nicaragua are enjoying new sanitation facilities, thanks to a project implemented by Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC) and funded by Gildan, a Montreal-based clothing company.

“This is a better environment for children and also healthier,” says Karla Gutierrez who has two children studying at the school, which previously had facilities that were in very bad condition.

The project is part of Gildan’s social responsibility program, so their team consulted with members of the community of Diriamba, who highlighted the need for new school bathrooms at Francisco Cordero School where most of their kids attended.

Education is a key focus in Gildan’s social responsibility program. “It is a huge satisfaction for us, to collaborate with the Ministry of Education and the communities on children’s development,” expressed Luis Brito, Gildan’s country manager, of the company’s US$48,000 contribution to the project.

Swaleh Karanja, country director at CCFC’s Nicaragua office, noted that the organization coordinated with the Ministry of Education (at central and local levels) and monitored the project.

Lisseth Reyes, Francisco Cordero’s principal, thanked Gildan and CCFC. She added, “For us, it’s quite important our children are in a [proper] and pleasant space that [indirectly] helps improve their learning.”

For CCFC, investing in education means creating opportunities for the future. It also helps children grow confidently to know their rights — making them less vulnerable to violence and exploitation and better prepared to be leaders in their community.
