Children will enjoy new classrooms in Estelí

Girls and boys of District I’s La Chiriza sector in Estelí will no longer have to travel up to three kilometers on foot to attend school thanks to an initiative promoted by Nicaragua’s Ministry of Education (MINED), the Taiwanese Fund for Children and Families (TFCF) and the Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC), which will build three classrooms.

Through this project three classrooms will be built for 200 primary students. “For the successful implementation of this project, close collaboration was established with MINED, which will provide teachers for the students once the classrooms are built,” explained Mr. Swaleh Karanja, CCFC director in Nicaragua. “MINED will also be in charge of maintaining and sustaining the infrastructure to optimize the use of the installations.”

Together with the infrastructure improvements, the project includes technical capacity enhancing activities for both teachers and parents on issues such as children’s rights, infant protection and appropriate teaching methodologies. In its 2013-2018 Strategic Plan, CCFC considers its first goal to be to contribute to children’s access to quality education. To this end, CCFC Nicaragua has collaborated with MINED, benefiting 22,783 children and adolescents through school infrastructure improvements, provision of snacks and school materials, and strengthening of the teachers’ technical capacities.

Background:

CCFC in Nicaragua has been supporting initiatives to improve the quality of education since 1994 through collaboration on educational material, furniture and strengthening of the teachers’ technical capacities to promote children’s continuation in school and their performance.

CCFC has collaborated in the construction of 5 preschool classrooms in Distrito I of the Municipality of Estelí and improved the classrooms in 3 other preschools with the support of the cooperation from the Government of Taiwan and the Taiwanese Fund for Children and Families (TFCF).
